Finding Creative Motivation...Again.
Hi, Makers,
There’s been a lot of talk online lately about staying motivation in your creative practice, and how perfectionism is the killer of that creativity. Honestly, I’ve noticed in my own creative practice that I haven’t been creating as much because I’ve been overthinking everything.
Should my journal layouts be chronological?
Do I have the “correct” color of ink or paint?
Does this page even go together?
The more stuck I became, the more I started scrolling for inspiration instead of actually creating. I was looking at everyone else’s spreads for ideas when, really, I should’ve been trusting the process and remembering that inspiration comes from doing… from simply getting on the page.
I’ve realized that the more I try to control how something turns out, the less I actually enjoy making it. But when I leave space—blank pages, loose pieces, unfinished edges—things begin to feel more like mine.
So this month, I’m letting go of chronology. I’m letting go of “color matching” and perfectly curated themes. I’m saying no to over-planned layouts and waiting until something feels “ready.”
I want to find my creative spark again, and the only way I know how to do that is by showing up and finding my creative voice… again.
If you’re in a similar place, let’s do this together. Let’s make messy art. Messy journals. Honest pages.
This week, squeeze paint onto a page. Glue random things to it. Write words you need to hear. See what happens.
And don’t forget to show me… I want to see all of your beautiful mess.
-Until next week. xoxo -Alyson

helllooo from a professional overplanner & procrastinator. I love the idea of making something before you feel like you can even start!
Im soooo behind because of this. It's just me at home here (college age daughter and no sig other) and I have a little creative art nest surrounding me on the couch and coffee table. And I STILL can't motivate to do it for some reason. I get stuck with the scroll too and I hate it. :o/ Gonna try to do better!!!!
